Joop Onnekink narrates in a lively way his experiences during the war as a child in the Battle of Arnhem. Earlier he wrote about his war experiences in his study about operation Market Garden. This book is an extract about the most crucial days. Joop found himself as an 8-year old in the centre of the heavy fighting in Oosterbeek in the so called Witches Cauldron. This book shows the war through the eyes of a child.
To put the story in a historical perspective, this book also narrates his story leading up to the Battle. His father, member of the resistance, was betrayed, and made a long and dangerous journey to England. As a reprisal the German police SD (Sicherheits Dienst) arrested the mother and her four children and put them in a Concentration Camp. After they were released they lived with the grandparents in Oosterbeek unaware of the fact that Operation Market Garden was due to happen in just that region.
After the Battle of Arnhem evacutation followed. The family wandered through half of the country. At last they settled in Scheemda, in the utmost north of the country, with family. After the liberation the father came back as a sergeant-major in the Allied Forces. With the help of his friends of the resistance he found back his wife and children. At the end of april 1945 the reunited family came home in Arnhem. The drawings were made by his sister Wil van Ingen, who also experienced the battle in 1944.
